I was sitting in a national brand coffee house yesterday having coffee and carrot cake and was struck by the differences between corporate blandness and bespoke local independent coffee houses.
I have 2 favourites in Shrewsbury my local @CoffeehouseLtd and @OldMarketHall and I choose them depending on what I am doing. I love the Shrewsbury Coffee House for its modern simple set up, welcoming staff as well as the great coffee and cakes (and the link to the awesome @ShrewsburyBread). I go there for team meetings early before work periodically and for a lunch catch up. OHM is for chill out when I am in town and want a lovely coffee, amazing flapjacks and a chance to read papers they provide that I don’t buy.
What do they both offer over the national chain? Service, quality calmness and the personal touch.
I have never yet been in this chain that appears clean – ever. The service is conveyer belt and impersonal, the cakes are bland and the coffee is average. On the plus side they are very quick to redo an order that is wrong – even if I made the error.
This made me think about what we do or could do for our patients that set us apart? We are a small team, we care about our practice and the people in it and we care about our patients as individuals. We get to know people and we work hard to give a consistent service. Our Dentistry (and I include Hygiene) is about quality and offering what we think is best and will give the best results – in our case we are selling health, and I want our patients to be the healthiest in Shrewsbury.
We are constantly trying to improve our service so we can be the best. We are working together to keep improving the practice.

Why was I in the chain and not OMH or the Shrewsbury Coffee House) then? Because my friend is dairy intolerant and they do that well and it was her turn to choose!
